marcoujor: Musical Intermission - "P"

"I hope your only rocky road is chocolate." -- Amanda Mosher

I debated on starting off this week's post with this quotation.

Don't get me wrong, chocolate and ice cream are two of my favorites. And I am a lover of laughter, humor and a light heart whenever possible.

Yet my heart and thoughts are with many of my dear friends who have recently lost a special person in their lives or who have family members who are seriously ill.

So I'd like to reframe this quotation if you are reading this with a heavy heart:

"I hope this rocky road is surrounded by those you love and everything that makes you smile." -- mar

Something Old:

The core of my musical heritage is southern rock. Creedence Clearwater Revival was alive and kicking from 1967 - 1972, so my young ears were "all ears" to them. This was also my first introduction to the unmistakable sounds of lead vocalist, John Fogerty.
Something New:

Lori McKenna has been around since 1998, although she is a brand new artist to me. When I heard this song "People Get Old", I sobbed long and hard - still get misty eyed at the universal truths in these lyrics with Lori's sweet, southern sound.

Something Borrowed:

In the late 1980s, my (soon-to-be) husband and I took dancing lessons with "Saint" Joan. I developed a serious love of musical power houses like Ella and many others featured throughout this series. "Puttin' On The Ritz" is one of those songs that forces me to dance (even if in my mind...)!
Something Blue:

Thomas, I can feel your smiles from the south. I'm finishing up the "P"-songs with some powerful guitar plucking and the phenomenal pipes of Keb' Mo'.

Maria.......You have my attention with CCR!!!! and Ella, Oh my....she's a legend. My Dad liked Ella & would sing along with her songs. Memories rush back hard & heavy.
Our loved ones are always in our hearts, always close to us. We are happy, only when they are & any of their troubles or pain, cut us deeply. This is just how it is and who would change this?
Thanks for the intro to Lori & Keb Mo. You find the most fabulous artists, girl! I'm glad you're YOU! Love & Hugs Paula/Effer

Very cool how we grew up with so much of the same music, dear Effer. I'm glad this brought back such warm memories.

Always happy to introduce my pals to new artists - thanks for being open.

Love and hugs back, Maria

Oh my goodness, that "People Get Old" song brings a tear to the eye, for sure. It's so bittersweet! Especially when I think of my grandparents who are both suffering from cancer right now. My grandpa shares the same birthday as my daughter so I talked to him the other night for over an hour on the phone. He spent his birthday in the hospital this year, but seemed in good, hopeful spirits as he reminisced about the past with me and talked about what he wanted to do as soon as they let him go. This is the first time I heard it. Thanks for sharing it.

Indeed, Shannon, the lyrics are so very universal in "People Get Old". I am not surprised you love Lori's sweet voice as I do.

Sorry about your grandparents - glad you are spending as much phone time with them as possible.

Thank you for stopping by. I will stop by your website and check out Bill's interview soon.

Hello mar - I listened to all the music this week. With a CCR lead in it was easy. The sentiment in Lori McKenna's song hits close to home. As a young man, I favored rocky road ice cream. I did not think it was a lifestyle choice.

Hi Mike,

I thought Lori McKenna's song might appeal to you - so happy you enjoyed all of this week's picks.

Now about that ice cream ... :)

Always can get down to some CCR. Couldn't listen to People Get Old knowing it evokes tears. Things in that department are still too tender with another one on her last days. Reminds me that I need to try and call her today. Ella always sets a great mood. Puttin' On the Ritz. Hugs dear one.

Sweet Peg,

I understand timing is everything - especially with songs like Lori's. Sending you all my love and warm thoughts - glad you will be reaching out to your dear stepmom today and I know she will as well.

Glad you enjoyed the CCR and Ella - such classics.

Dear Mareer,
I've always loved CCR!
You have the most incredible music library. All these "P" ones are great, and a nice way to spend some quality time in the morning.
Thank you, and best thoughts your way.

What a great mix of songs! I nice respite for the day. Your opening was very true. Something about this time of year and lots of losses. My father passed away two and a half weeks ago. Things are so busy afterwards, that it seems it was a month ago. Fortunately, I have been surrounded by love from many sides. I have found, that a bit of “rocky road” helps too!

Thanks Maria. So glad to see your smile, I remember it well. 💗

Dear Kathleen,

How wonderful to see you here, dear friend.

I am sorry to her about your Dad - time does become surreal after such a loss. So happy you are surrounded by love.

Stop back any time. Take good care. Love, Maria

Proud Mary, like all the other songs of Creedence Clearwater Revival, is still on my Top 20 list of favorites. Sadly, the rest of the P's never reached SA.

Mar, this series of yours is a mixture of surprises and good memories, and the ideal entertainment at the beginning of a weekend.

Sending you lots of love,

Martie

So glad to introduce you to new music, dear Martie. Not surprising that CCR found their way to you in SA.

Thanks for such a wonderful comment

I'm a wee bit later than usual getting over here to see your wonderful music selections, sweet friend. And it was worth the wait. Ella Fitagerald, Keb' Mo', Lori McKenna, and CCR? Oh I love them! I'm also wish you love and light. It's so fun to see your musical interests coming alive here. I think you could have a second calling as a DJ. Hehe
