In a recent post I posed the question ‘To Niche or Not?’. Some of you shared your thoughts via email and they were greatly appreciated, as were the comments generated by my query.

In general, readers seem to enjoy the variety my weekly desk posts offer. Perhaps the old adage applies here that ‘variety is the spice of life’.

I was also reminded in the feedback received of our universal love of music. Granted, not every genre of music is everyone’s cup of tea (rooibos, chaga or otherwise...LOL).

My dear friend and fellow writer, Martie Coetser - Pozyn went so far as to suggest I do a monthly desk post on music.

Well, this suggestion is music to my ears… 🌝

Hoping that some of the songs I include are music to your ears as well, whether you’re introduced to a new artist or taken back in time with an old favorite. Whatever theme I focus on, I’ll try to include a mix across the years.

Let me know if you have any favorite songs or artists titles/names that you can leave in the comment section or via email. I’d love to include them in upcoming posts. I enjoy the challenge of matching a great song to a great theme.

To start out, I thought I’d apply a traditional wedding theme to musical selections. Please join me, if you are so inclined.

SOMETHING OLD

Bill Withers was a natural pick here, an oldie but a goodie.

Born on July 4, 1938, I first heard what is still my favorite song by him 40 years ago. Yikes, I was sixteen years old in 1977 and well on my way to musical addiction.

Remember this one? I sure do!

SOMETHING NEW

The National started making music in 1999. I am only now discovering music from that period of time - which, for me, is still a blur in many ways.

May, 2017 was my first exposure to The National - specifically this song. (You may want to close your eyes as I did with this YouTube. I love the song--the ironically blurry visuals, not so much.)

Their album, including this pre-release, is called Sleep Well Beast and is due out on September 8th. I look forward to exploring more of Matt Berninger’s vocals.

SOMETHING BORROWED

I wasn’t sure how to interpret ‘borrowed music’. I chose to focus on a favorite and a cover song of the same.

Patsy Cline and ‘Crazy’ go hand-in-hand, at least in my mind. Her country version was a Number 2 country hit in 1962. Sadly Patsy would die in 1963, at the age of thirty in a multiple-fatality crash of the private plane of her manager, Randy Hughes.

Willie Nelson’s version appears on his 1962 debut album. And Willie is the original composer of this iconic song, which I had not known before.

Here are both renditions. I don’t have a favorite. Do you?

SOMETHING BLUE

I was familiar with Drive-By Truckers around 2001, but never really followed them. Only recently I’ve discovered the sounds of Jason Isbell, who has since performed solo and, as in one of my new favorites, with The 400 Unit.

Spoiler alert, grab a tissue (or, in my case, a box) … this category is ‘Something Blue’ after all.
Well, how did I do with this first musical installment, Martie? Anyone? I had a blast putting together this mini-concert and thank you for indulging me.

See you next time and keep music in your world.

Hugs,

I always loved your posts on music and the themes that go with them. For me, Crazy is always a good choice, whether Willie or Patsy is singing. Love this post and the Bill Withers song is a new one for me and I love the Lovely Day. Looking forward to listening to the others. Peg

DJ Mareer,

Nice idea from Martie, and of course, you came through with this musical "suite." You did a great job.

I just knew Willie was going to be featured there, somehow!

It was good to sip on my morning Java, watching a rather murky sunrise this morning, ( more than 200 fires burning in our province of BC this morning) listening to your sweet choices, and thinking of you in your brand new DJ attire.
Love and hugs,
Vickster

Dear Vickster,

My heart goes out to the families and fire fighters effected by the fires in BC.

Now you have me smiling about my DJ outfit - which coincidentally looks like my typical attire.

Thanks for sharing your coffee with me and have a peaceful day.
Love, mareer

Prof. Mahreer,

Always a pleasure seeing Willie featured in your musical compilations and it was especially nice to see Patsy Cline made the cut in this one, too!

Works for me! :)

Dear Mar,

Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson are old favorites of mine. I will never hear enough of them.

The Grammy Award winner, Jason Isbell, as well as the rest, is new to me. And this is why I have asked for music: To hear what I’ve been missing all these years.

I am so glad my suggestion was not in vain, dear sista! I look forward to your next music installment :)

Hugs,

Martie

Dear Martie,

As if your suggestions could ever be in vain - I think not ... :)

I'm thrilled to be introducing you (and others) to some of my newer favorites - and sharing some 'oldies but goodies' like Willie and Patsy.

Have a peaceful and safe day. Love you lots, mar

Another vote for Patsy - I know another would have been my Momma's.

Like you, dear Lady, Mom loved her country music - so happy she passed that love to me as well.

Thanks for dropping by. Thinking of you and hugs too, mar

MARusic ---- I see that losing an email address has caused me to be late to your Wednesday music offering. Martie's suggestion is spot-on. Mar and music -Marusic, is a perfect niche for your musical experise.

Dear Maria,

As always, I'm the last one to arrive to the party, but better late than never, right? I enjoyed this mini-concert and the ingenious wedding theme that went with it. Martie's idea was splendid and I'm glad that you listened to her. Thanks to you and your musical posts, I have been introduced to so many musicians and music that I would probably not have known about if it wasn't for you. Some of them have become some of my favorites whom I listen to quite often. So thank you, my beautiful friend for that gift. Loved Mike's catchy new name for you, too. :)
Looking forward to your next mini-concert, DJ Marusic!
Take care!
Love and hugs,
Sannel

Dear Sannel,

The music is always on 'at my place' and your visits are always appreciated as well.

How lovely to think that I've introduced you to some new voices. Thank you for letting me know that.

I'm looking forward to my next music post as well - my Marusic muse had better get to writing ... ;)

Sending you and Freddie lots of love and hugs too, Maria

Oh my goodness, before I say anything else, I am loving, LOVING Jason Isbell! His voice and the tune of the song are so...sweet, even if the song is a little blue. :)
I love the other selections, too. Hmm, I'm with Martie! This musical post is great.
Ooh, another theme: I'm always looking for inspirational music. Not the religious kind, but the kind that gets you pumped and motivated to start your day, or if you're ever having a bad day. A couple songs I like that could belong are "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi and "Unstoppable" by Sia and "Try" by P!nk. They make for good workout music, too! Hehe.

Thank you for taking the time to stop by during your month of sacred travel, dear Cynthia.

I'm so happy you loved Jason Isbell's voice as much as me - I intend to learn much more about his musical resume.

Thanks ever so much for this awesome theme of inspiration. I will check out your suggestions - love BonJovi and Pink but Sia is new to me - and a couple songs come immediately to mind for me as well - more to come ... :)

Thinking of you as you embark on your retreat.

Love, peace and hugs, Maria
