marcoujor: Nurses & Teachers

I shared my ideas of what makes a great nurse and teacher in my latest Inspiration Station.  'Her' name is Alice Brogan, if you haven't had a chance yet to check out my tribute to her, just CLICK HERE to see it.

I asked these same two questions in the survey that I recently sent out to some family, friends and colleagues.

What makes a good  nurse?

What makes a good teacher?

Here are some of the responses I received...

What makes a good  nurse?

(From nurses...)
  • Someone that can pull the knowledge, technology, and compassion into one package
  • Patience and kindness
  • As I see it the traits of mothers, fathers, teachers and nurses intertwine.  A nurse is a teacher, mother and father - all possess the same qualities

(From non-nurses)
  • Loving, kind, caring, attentive, fair, consistent, practical, patient
  • Compassionate
  • Genuine compassion and being knowledgeable about the care needed for their clients

  • Communication
  • Caring, concerned, listener, patient
  • A caring and compassionate person
  • A passionate desire to comfort all who are disabled, and/or in pain, and/or even merely uncomfortable due to physical or psychological disease, illness, or malfunction. I would love to see all the traits of a parent in a nurse
  • Compassion,  skill and a firm faith in Jesus Christ being the Master physician.
  • A good education, compassion, dedication, patience & self-motivation & discipline!
  • Passion about the subject s/he is teaching and being curious to know more
  • Presenting matter in an interesting way
  • Calm, flexible and knowledgeable
  • A caring and dedicated person
  • Patient and understanding with children
  • A passionate desire to enlighten others with knowledge. I would love to see all the traits of a parent in a teacher
  • Knowledge and the passion and skill to share it
  • The ability to inspire students to want to learn, and to make life-long learning and curiosity about life, second nature
  • As I see it the traits of mothers, fathers and nurses intertwine. A teacher is a mother, father, nurse etched - all possess the same qualities
  • The teacher who has a burning desire to infuse their students with a love and a lust for knowledge of every sort
  • Kindness, compassion, willingness to learn, humour, respect and sensitivity about the feelings of others, knowledge of you are, positive attitude. Experience helps too, and the willingness to share your experience and knowledge in innovative ways to hold students’ interest

(Responses from teachers)

Not only having the knowledge of the subject matter-but the skills to assist individuals to learn it as well.  Plus being part detective-trying to figure out how to assist others to learn

(Responses from non-teachers)
  • Love of knowledge
  • Patient, consistent, nurturing, knowledgeable, unbiased, practical, fun-loving

  • Passion about the subject s/he is teaching and being curious to know more
  • Presenting matter in an interesting way
  • Calm, flexible and knowledgeable
  • A caring and dedicated person
  • Patient and understanding with children
  • A passionate desire to enlighten others with knowledge. I would love to see all the traits of a parent in a teacher
  • Knowledge and the passion and skill to share it
  • The ability to inspire students to want to learn, and to make life-long learning and curiosity about life, second nature

I had no idea that Alice had taught all my family and friends as well. ☺

Once again, there is much universality in thoughts and ideas--and a wonderful reminder for those of us who have chosen one or both of these amazing professions.

I'm dedicating this song to the many selfless nurses, teachers and nursing students whose paths I've been blessed to cross.  Now, more than ever, this world needs you to keep doing what you're doing to heal and teach those around you.

Your work is always a joy to read. Getting a glimpse of the opinions of others encourages us to observe & listen closely to what a vast assortment of individuals are thinking.
At the end of the day, it is our sharing & understanding of one another that unifies people from every walk of life.
Nurses & teachers are undoubtedly at the top of the list in terms of professionals who play integral parts in our life from the very moment of our birth! Thank you Maria for the gifts you bring us. Peace & Love, Paula

How very similar the responses are to this variety of roles: father, mother, nurse, teacher. They do overlap and intertwine, hopefully, each enhancing the other. Your survey has really provided some insight to how others see things. Nice!

Dear Maria,

There is a lot of overlap here, and it goes to show the expectations and wishes we have towards those who serve our intimate personal needs. And this is spite of the pressures in those jobs!
What would we do without them? You are both nurse and teacher, and must have changed so many lives in the most positive ways!
Thank you for all you do in both fields. You have all the characteristics described here.
Hugs and love

I agree that nurses and teachers should have the same skills, compassion, love, understanding, and nurturing nature that parents have. After all, teachers and nurses at some point in time - and for extended periods - are an extension of the family unit.

That's a great way to describe the role that nurses and teachers play in their patients / students' lives.

Thanks for your visit and insights, dear Sha. Love, mar
