Love and Music

I understood music well before I understood love.

As a child of the 1960s, my home was filled with the London Beat and the British Invasion. I teethed on The Ed Sullivan Show and American Bandstand.

With a Georgia peach of a Momma, I know my fair share of Country Music and the Nashville Sound as we listened to The Grand Ole Opry and watched Hee Haw on television each week.

My Pop worked for Reading Railroad, thus explaining my affinity for Soul Train, tunes such as Motown and R&B and Soul.

Come to think of it, I still understand music more than I understand love!

I can be anywhere, thinking of a person with love and a song will pop into my mind. This can include funerals, hospitals, weddings, all kinds of places. Some people I love have an actual song that I associate with them. They may / may not be aware of what that song is!

Sometimes lyrics fly through my mind and it helps me just get centered, instead of, oh, perhaps inserting my foot in my mouth. ☺

Here are some of those very lyrics. See if you recognize them as well. If not, don’t worry, answers are below.

Love in Lyrics

I'm young, I know, but even so
I know a thing or two
And I learned from you (1)
I'm not trying to make you feel uncomfortable
I'm not trying to make you anything at all
But this feeling doesn't come along everyday
And you shouldn't blow the chance
When you've got the chance to say (2)
Once on a high and windy hill
In the morning mist
Two lovers kissed
And the world stood still
Then your fingers touched
My silent heart and taught it how to sing (3)
Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with a wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there's something there (4)

The Beatles, “Here, There and everywhere"

Believe me you really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy (5)

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die
And I love her (6)

The Beatles: "And I Love Her"

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall (7)
If you wanted the moon
I would try to make a star
But I, would rather you let me give my heart (8)
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again (9)
Ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue when I fell into a dream
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before (10)
Sometimes I stare into space
Tears all over my face
I can't explain it
Don't understand it
I hadn't ever felt like this before
Now that funny feeling has me amazed
Don't know what to do
My head's in a haze (11)
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me They can't take away my dignity (12)
You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
I don't know, I don't know (13)

The Beatles: “Something”

The Artists & Songs

Nazareth: Love Hurts (1)
Olivia Newton John: I Honestly Love You (2)
The Four Aces: Love Is A Many Splendored Thing (3)
Beatles: Here, There And Everywhere (4)
The Partridge Family: I Think I Love You (5)
Beatles: And I Love Her (6)

Funny you talk about music this week. I usually listen to XM while I work on my computer and yesterday when I put it on Jared's song "life is but a dream" just came on.

Somehow, this seems perfect for a Valentine's Week presentation. I enjoyed this, it may have even given me an idea for a story. (Ideas have been in short supply lately.)

Listening to the Beatles before walking the dogs this morning.

This makes me wonder. Do we all have songs? And if so?

Dear Mike,
How wonderful that this post gave your muse an idea - I shall look forward to reading this story, as I do all of your work.
Wonder no more about the songs- the answer is yes.

Mar, we think so much alike. As you know, I live on music, it's what drives me each day. The music inspires me to write poems and if I'm lucky, my muse will write a story from a song I'm listening to. I will be hanging around for awhile, listening and enjoying your videos. And, BTW you could've put an Elvis video on, ' cos ' Kentucky Rain really makes me ' all shook up ' lol. Hugs.

I love how you love music, dear Ruby. And, like you, I think Elvis is 'all that and a bag of chips'.

Love you and keep dancing, mar

Dear Maria
We grew up with the same music!!! When I began to read the lyrics I knew right off what song it was. My fav has always been the Carpenters which could move every emotion possible.,When I wanted to run with the wind and be that hippie chick... it was John Denver and Dan Folgerberg...And lastly for a young girl who knew nothing about love ...I wanted to move to Boston as surely that was where love could be found. Do you remember the song, "Please come to Boston"

Loved this post!!!
Sending big hugs
Kimmie

Maria....."Music" has been huge in my life since birth and I've no doubt, it will be forever. I'm not ever able to name that "favorite song, type of music nor artist" because they are ALL my favorites. Yes, I have a special affinity for the Big Band Era, Broadway Musical Scores & acapella ....but just give me music, music music....and I'm a happy woman. The memories of people, places and precious moments that music creates, cannot be denied. It's magical. The Universal language and vehicle to our soul.....Life would be dreadful without music....all of it!......Love my Music Lovers like you too, girl....Hugs, Paula

Dear Maria,

What a perfect subject this week of Valentine. I love music and especially a good love song. There are so many love songs that I enjoy listen to. Actually, too many to remember off the top of my head. But "You Are So Beautiful" by Joe Cocker and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin are the ones that's right up there on my list.
Thank you for a loving post and yes, You Are So Beautiful, my sweet friend.
Love and hugs,
Sannel

You and I share so much of the same era of music and lyrics. Hearing them takes me back to those times.Love your music selections.
"Imagine me and you, I do, I think about you day and night, it's only right, to think about the one you love..."
"When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue..."
Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings, of the bluebird as she sings, the six o'clock alarm would never ring. But it rings and I rise..."

I watched a movie that I know you would love, love, love. It's full of old love songs sung in new ways. It's a love story. Have you seen, "Strange Magic"? It's animation, but I love it.
https://youtu.be/c1qGVRGEe5c I'm coming straight on for you!

We had a great selection of music genres to choose from back then. I learned the Beatle catalogue on guitar and loved the Motown sound.
Great choice of videos too Mar.

Dear Maria

Your knowledge of songs and musicians are absolutely precious. The messages spread by musicians through their songs are worthy to treasure. I see them on the same level as scriptures, and quotes of wise men.

You and the songs of Adele are linked in my mind.

Hugs,

Martie

Mar, I love this post! Music is such a huge part of my life. I can't live without it. In fact, I have Pandora playing on my computer right now at work. It's the first thing I turn on when I fire up my computer each morning.

One of my favorite songs of all time is "Color My World" by Chicago. It's not very long, but the words, rhythm and melody put me in a very loving place.

Dear Sha,

I am totally in sync with you on my need for music - all through the day, for all kinds of reasons.

I'm partial to 'Color My World' as well - many loving memories come back when I hear it.

Love you and have a peaceful week to come, mar
