David Bowie, would have been 70-years-old on January 8th, 2017 had he not died on January 10th of 2016.

I am clearly not the only one missing this musical icon. In fact, James F. Kenney, Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, has proclaimed the week of Friday, January 6 through Saturday, January 14, 2017 to be PHILLY LOVES DAVID BOWIE WEEK.

In his proclamation, Kenney urges all citizens to recognize the extraordinary contributions the organizers are making to celebrate Bowie’s roots in Philadelphia and to help fund an important City institution to cure and prevent cancer. The following article from XPN's The Key outlines the event.

"... the legendary career of David Bowie who performed many sold out shows that delighted Philadelphians over the past few decades. He recorded his album “Young Americans” at the iconic Sigma Sound Studios on 12th Street in August 1974. He also recorded three LPs – “David Live,” “Young Americans,” and “Stage” – in Philadelphia as well as filmed the music video for the 1983 hit single “Modern Love.” In total, his works include 27 studio albums, 9 live albums, 49 compilation albums, 6 extended plays, and 121 singles. He is estimated to have sold over 140 million records during his unparalleled lifetime career.

Bowie’s intense passion was about sharing love with others and encouraging them to spread their generosity. His untimely death from cancer on January 10, 2016 stunned his many fans around the world who were devastated by the tragic news...

...Philadelphians will not be alone when they honor his legacy with “Philly Loves David Bowie Week” that will comprise more than a dozen unique events between January 6 and 14.

Proceeds of the events will benefit cancer research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), which was founded in November of 1855 as the first children’s hospital in the United States. CHOP remains a leader for similar institutions having been ranked first in more specialty care programs than any other pediatric hospital in the country, and is a leader in pediatric oncology."

On January 10th, my radio station XPN played David Bowie songs all day long. It was nostalgic to tune in as much as possible, stirring memories from as far back as the mid-1970s.

To know proceeds from area concerts this week will benefit CHOP, the hospital where I did my pediatric nursing rotation, is inspiring, making Bowie's legacy even more meaningful for me.

If you love this man's sound as much as me, I'm including three songs that are on my mind at this time. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Hello mar - Bowie was so popular with my youngest. When he passed she, like many others grieved. This is a wonderful tribute to the man and his music.

I'm not surprised the love for Bowie spans from east to west coast, dear Mike. Thanks for being first to visit.

This is a wonderful tribute to an incredibly talented performer. I love his music and was saddened by his passing. Let's Dance always lifts my spirits and brings back a feeling of the eighties.

Prof. Mahreer,

Wow ... 70! I'm still picturing David Bowie with spikey-poofy hair and dressed like the Goblin King.

I think it's awesome that Philly is using this event to raise funds for kids cancer research. Kudos to Philly and the concert participants!

I know, dear Ange... Davis Bowie is indeed ageless to me.

He had such an altruistic side that it's only right proceeds from remembering him should help kids with cancer. Philly did this one right for sure... :)

I love David Bowies' voice, and his guts. Some of his songs were and still are popular down here, close to the south pole.

Beautiful tribute, dear Maria! Thanks for reminding us of his death last year this time.

Hugs,
Martie

Maria.....Yes, it was a painful loss of a huge talent. The incredible LOVE between David & Imam always touched me. How wonderful that they created a precious child from their love.
You know someone had a loyal fan base & stellar music history when an entire week of remembrance is devoted to them. That speaks volumes. You GO, Philadelphia!
I would not have thought that it's been a year already! WHO has put time on super speed, Maria?? I'm wanting it to slow down.
Thanks for this great piece Maria. I love visiting with you. Paula

And I love when you visit, dear Paula - always great to see you here.

As far as time goes, it is travelling at a break neck speed for me as well.

Enjoy your Sunday. Love ya, Maria

It's difficult for me to think of him being 70. I'm listening to ' Let's Dance ' and the beat rocks! Thanks for sharing his songs. Hugs...

It is always sad when a music icon passes on to the next life. At least his music continues to enrich people's lives. Nice to know that funds may accrue and aid the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in his honor.

I agree, Peggy - now Bowie lives on through his music and the altruism of his loyal fans.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Dear Mareer,

What a lovely way to use this music, and at the same time cherish his memory. I think this would be such a great comfort to his fans as well.

I can believe it's been a year since we lost one of our most talented icons! I was in complete shock when I heard the news that morning as I was getting ready for work.

So glad Philly honored him in such a big way. Was CHOP at one time named Children's Heart Hospital? I remember when we had just moved from Philly to Jersey (the summer before my freshman year in high school), one of my cousins and his wife came to visit us. They'd come from York to Philly to take their infant child to the (as I remember it) Children's Heart Hospital in Philly. Their baby had been born with a hole in its heart. Sadly, the infant didn't make it, but my cousin and his wife did everything they could to save the sweet baby. The Children's Hospital was known as the best in the country at the time. Sad memories. It's ironic that that sad memory is tied to another that occurred decades later.

Thanks for the tribute, Mar. Bowie was one of the best.

I know. dear Sha...this has been an incredibly fast year, in more ways than one.

Yes, this is the very same CHOP. As far back as the early 1980's, when I did my Pediatric nursing rotation there, CHOP has offered state of the art and compassionate care to kids (and their families).

Love you lots and have a great week, mar

    Welcome to my desk...

I am a work in progress, so a rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected every week!

Pull up a comfy chair and make yourself at home.
