marcoujor: Pondering daith piercing for pain relief?

5/31/2017

Thanks for joining me on this post which is a follow up to last week’s,  Musings on Migraines.

This week I’d like to share my friend, Angelia Phillips’ journey with migraines.  Please check out two recent posts from her website, flashPress.weebly.com

☙ Daith Piercing: Relief from migraines and more

☙ Organic Alternatives: Confuse the brain to ease the pain

As I had never recognized daith piercings in others as a potential relief for migraines and other types of pain, I was intrigued to hear Ange’s experiences.

In fact, I had some further questions, which she was kind enough to answer for me, and allow me to share with you.

Maria: Speak more about a second piercing...

Angelia: I’ll know if I need a second piercing if the migraines begin migrating (pun intended but accurate) to another area, such as centered or to the right side. Thus far, that has been the somewhat of the case. However, since the piercing is still new, I want to give my body time to adjust and let the nerves figure out how they want to react to this.

Also, the side of one’s head that has the daith piercing needs time to heal up. Pressure on this area is both painful and can cause a slowing in wound healing.

Once the wound is healed, if I’m still experiencing migraine pain anywhere, or even moderate headache pain, I’ll have the right ear done.
Picture
Angelia's daith piercing at two weeks into healing. It's red due to cleansing manipulations, not infection.

Maria: What are the benefits of the daith piercing?

Angelia: Thus far, the benefits of just having one side done have honestly been remarkable. I’ve only had to take meds for headache/migraine pain twice, and only once did I take a maximum dose.

Other perks I’ve noticed are...

  1. Fewer/shorter bouts of fatigue, except for when I’m tired due to exertion, such as a workout
  2. Less trouble with frequent nausea and nervous stomach
  3. Decrease in anxiety and restlessness

Maria: How did you decide when to have it done?

Angelia: I was having migraine pain more and more often. The headaches were almost constantly causing me to not be able to keep up with my schedule. I was also having to take even more meds than previous years to handle the pain, as much as possible. It had all the makings of a potential train wreck for my liver and digestive system.

The daith piercing was an organic option with a high probability of solving the whole headache challenge. I had little to lose and a great deal to gain, so I went with it.

The short-term discomfort is well worth the long-term benefits.

Maria: My nursing students and their instructors are only able to wear one small post earring on each lobe in the clinical / hospital units. Does the daith piercing have to be worn 24/7 for maximum effect or can it be removed during work hours?

Angelia: The hoop or post has to be worn for six weeks, without removing to prevent wound closure. It's also recommended to be worn permanently, even after healing, for the same reason.

Some healed wounds can close in a very short time, even if the piercing is many years old. To prevent having to repeat the process, it’s recommended daith hoops or posts be worn permanently.

Maria: Did you only discover your allergy to metals after the piercing?

Angelia: Nope. I’ve known I have a metal allergy since I was a kid. Nearly any metal against my skin caused a reaction, like a watch band clasp or sunglasses with metal frames. I’ve had a reaction to every metal I’ve come into moderate contact with, other than gold or silver.

Maria: Is there a difference in benefit with the type of material of the earring used in the daith piercing?

Angelia: Yes. Some folks with metal allergies do very well with surgical steel. Not me, but many. Others can minimize their reaction risk as well by choosing to go with titanium hoops.

I went with titanium and have been reacting to it, although it’s been mild. I’ve not rashed but I’ve had consistent weeping and crystallizing of serous fluid on the ring and at the wound edges. I’ve spoken with others who developed slight weeping and crystallization on the hoop and near the wound entrances, but it stopped and cleared up completely over a couple months of healing. So, I’m hoping I’ll not have to do a replacement at all. If I do, I’ll switch to high-grade sterling.

Thanks, dear Ange for answering my questions, which I believe will be of interest and help to others as well.

I look forward to hearing about your continued experiences. Would even make a wonderful video, from before to months after? Just sayin’. 😏

Dear Mar and Angelia

Thank you so much for this precious information regarding daith piercing. I guess I should have both ears pieced, as I am suffering Fibromyalgia on both sides? Just have to get over my fears!

Angelia, I hope your migraine will disappear totally and that a second piercing will not be necessary.

Hugs to you both,

Martie

Hi Martie,

Thanks for the well-wishes!

If you decide to get daith piercings, I hope you'll please keep us posted on your results.

I'm doing better and better with decreased migraine onset and the last two acute ones have only lasted a day, rather than a week.

It's a wonderful feeling of freedom after having interfering with my life for so many years.

Hello Maria and Angelia,

I had no clue about daith piercing, but thanks to this intriguing post, I do now. I really do hope that this procedure will be a big improvement to you, Angelia. Hopefully, you don't need to do the second piercing. Looks painful! Ouch! :( Best of luck to fight this horrible migraine.

I know that you both suffer from this, and if daith piercing will help then just go for it! Looking forward to hear about Angelia's continued experiences regarding her daith piercing.
Love and peace,
Sannel

But then again, that second piecing will not even be half as painful as that horrible migraine you're suffering. Wishing you soothing healing and best of luck!

Sannel

Thanks for both visits, dear Sannel.
I join you in hoping that Angelia's migraines will soon be ancient history.

Hi Sannel,

I'm still undecided if I'll have my right daith pierced, but only because of the pain aspect. I'm likely to go through with it because I believe I'll feel more balanced if I have it done on both sides. I'm weird like that, lol!

So far, the results keep getting better and better so, I've no regrets about having it done. :)

Rolly,

My ear is still sore, but only a bit. Nothing terrible.

I'm still gaining ground weekly, with fewer acute migraines and so far, none have lasted longer than a day. Big improvement! :)

Dear Maria and Angelia,
Wow, I honestly don't think I could go through the daith piercing. It looks painful enough to make me cringe! But if it helps it probably would be very worthwhile, so that's what I'm hoping for Angelia, of course.
Thank you both for this new insight on pain relief. I had no idea of this prior to Angelia's decision to try it.

Dear Vicki,
I appreciate your candor as I'm no fan of pain either - any kind.
I join you in wishing maximal benefit for Angelia and I've asked her to keep us 'posted' - sorry, bad pun :(
Have a peaceful evening. Love, mareer

V,

I'm so glad you don't have migraines, 'cause you would for sure hate the piercing procedure as much as I did.

The fewer who need to have it done, the better, but for those who do, it's worth it.

Some of the new medical therapies remind me of ancient techniques but if they work, then, wonderful. I can't imagine how painful this procedure is. When I had a third earring put in my ear lobe it was into the cartilage and quite painful. This looks even more difficult to endure. All the best of luck in conquering those migraines. Thanks for the insight into different therapies, Mar. Hugs, Peg

I agree, Peg ... sounds in many ways like the Ayurvedic practices of India or Shiatsu acupressure of Japan.

Your supportive comment is appreciated and thanks for sharing your experiences. Hugs back, mar

Peg,

That old saying in Proverbs, "...nothing new under the sun" comes to mind.

My first piercings were in my ear lobes. They were fairly painless and healed fast.

My second piercings were just above the first, higher on the lobe and it took months for them to heal, even tho no cartilage was penetrated.

This one was the most painful and will be the longest in healing (usually a min of three months) but thankfully, once the procedure was over, the rest hasn't been hard to manage.

Once this one, and the other (if I get it) are all done, I'm through with piercings of any more of my parts, lol.

Hello mar - I am old fashioned, I guess, fighting pain, with pain, seems like one of those old wives tales that you hear in stories. Since I don't suffer migraines, I don't know what measures people will go to to ease their discomfort.

Dear Mike,
I can only imagine what my Mom's response would be to a daith piercing - so I appreciate all reactions to this method of pain relief, yours included.
And I also appreciate your visit. Hugs, mar

I guess I'm lucky to have never had migraine pain, but I've known friends who suffer with this. I was unaware of daith piercing.Hopefully this will help them. Best wishes to you both, and thank you for sharing. Shared on Twitter...

Maria, thanks for spreading the word on daith piercings. I do believe it has helped Angelia and others. I am witnessing it with my own eyes.

There is no greater feedback than from one who is experiencing or witnessing the change / improvement after a daith piercing.

Thanks, nee and have a peaceful weekend. Hugs, Maria
