marcoujor: September Salutations

Hi dear friends and faithful readers,

I missed you all over this summer. As many of you know, I took a hiatus from my weekly publishing schedule on marcoujor’s musings for a few reasons...

A needed break from technology

My colleagues, Angelia Phillips (of flashPress) and Vicki Warner (of WarnerWords), and I had been less than pleased with Weebly’s technological glitches, especially as some of you were unable to leave comments or were inconvenienced by making several attempts before success.
Thanks to Angelia for exploring many of the alternative websites currently available. At this time, we’ve decided to stay with Weebly as the other options have their own brand of navigational difficulties.

My fingers remain permanently crossed!

Time to write, oddly enough

I wanted to dedicate a season’s worth of time to finish up a book, long in my heart, called...
A Toolbox for Novice Nurses
From A to Z
Here is a sneak peek at the cover page, designed by the talented Michael Friedman of Mockingbird Books.

I’m ever grateful to the generosity of valued colleagues, students and friends who have given me inspiration over the years. Some of their wisdom has been incorporated into the specific chapters.

I’m also thankful to Peg Cole (of In The World) and Angelia Phillips, who are currently giving the manuscript an editorial scrutiny.
Picture
I recently learned that September is the month of National Self-Care Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. Both of these issues are close to my heart. I encourage my students to develop and maintain a self-care plan and to reflect on self-awareness daily--both in practice and my upcoming book.

I’ll be sure and let you all know when this labor of love has been published. My projection date is on or before September 23rd, the first day of Fall.

Last, but not least

As age would have it, I have attended to a couple of my own self-care issues, involving my eyes and some pain, after physical strain, for a home improvement initiative.

I’m relieved to say that all is well, both with my health and our home. I was reminded of Mom, who would have said something like, “Your body will tell you when it’s time to slow down.”

I have very much missed…

…sharing my latest musical inspirations with you. I have lots of catching up to do in that arena.

As any of you who check my FB wall knows, many of us mourned the August 16th death of a musical goddess, Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul.

It only seems fitting to wrap this post up with a few of the zillions of Aretha songs I had to choose from. I’ve selected some of her bluesy sounds, perhaps not as well known to you.

If you are a lover of the blues, as I am, no one does it better. If you are not accustomed to this musical genre, give Queen Aretha a listen and let me know what you think.

Morning Mar, So good to see you back, busy lady! Thanks for your September window, and congratulations on the upcoming book, the cover is beautiful! Aretha Franklin is a fine way to start the day, your song selections are new to me, and much appreciated. Blues and coffee, I'm liking it...

Dear Mareer,

Happy to see you back in the weekly world again, and total admiration that you managed to take some time off to satisfy the demands of your body and mind, although I know you filled in all the "spaces" with work of another kind.
I’m looking forward to your book for nurses, and know I have the ideal person in my family for one of your first copies purchase. As always, I’m your cheerleader, dear friend.
Love and hugs,
Vickster.

Listening now to the Queen, the ever-delightfully soulful, Aretha. We certainly grew up listening to her melodies, singing them under our breath and at the top of our lungs. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. And loved her performance in The Blues Brothers. Had to think for a while to remember who sounds like her these days. . . and it's Nora Jones, especially on the song, "A Change is Gonna Come."
Have missed your weekly musings and am so thrilled that you've put together this collection of Nurse-isms. Reading through them was a joy and I'm eager to get my own signed copy of your wonderful book. Gonna send you something I found among Mom's things about the Nurse.
Love you Sister. Stay well. Hugs.

Dear Peg,

I am not surprised you love Aretha as much as me.

Your eagle eye is so appreciated - and you are high on the list for an autographed copy.

I am looking forward to reading what you sent me - special that it was special to your dear Mom.

Love you too and big hugs, Maria

No better way for you to slow down than to kick back with some Aretha - "nurse's orders"!!

Besides, I'll soon be sending you my manuscript to publish...so get some rest, OK?! Hugs, mar.

Wonderful to have you back in Weebly, dear Mar.

I look forward to read "A Toolbox for Novice Nurses
From A to Z". I know it will be filled with wisdom.

Indeed, “Your body will tell you when it’s time to slow down.” I am glad you are well after enjoying a well-deserved break.

Aretha Franklin was very popular in SA. She was, in fact, one of Nelson Mandela's favorites.

Take care, dear sista ♥

I hop over here ever so often. I knew you would update again and I was awarded for my patience. Hehe. So good to see an update from you!
I love that you honored your need for some time away. I love that you are finishing a book. WOWZA! I can't wait to buy it!
I love that you included music videos! I love that you are just so wonderful and amazing and incredible and all the best adjectives I can think of to describe you.
I didn't know it was a month of self-care and mental health - but these are two things that have become near and dear to me as I embark upon my meditation teaching. I love that! I've been doing morning self-massage with sesame oil - it's an ancient Ayurvedic practice that gets me awake and excited to begin the day. And I started on Aug. 31 for the first time. It was like I was anticipating self care. Ha!
So good to see you and your beautiful blog. Sorry about the technical difficulties you have faced. Alas, with the "ease" of technology comes the "pain" of troubleshooting, no?
Ah well. Sending you hugs and wishes for an incredible weekend!

Maria......I'm a tad bit tardy to the party. Draggin me butt, I am.....tired, down & out~~a rare place for me but you know, we all have these unwelcome moments. Gotta push through the muck & mire till we get through to the sunshine.
I missed you too, girlfriend and am glad you're back. I wish you much luck and tons of sales with that "new Book!" You are one hell of a force to be reckoned with, girl! Just Go Go GO!
......Oh sad....Yes I will miss Aretha now. She was a pure gem. How wonderful to have her amazing music forever!
Peace, Paula

Never too late to stop by, dear Paula - take good care of yourself. Mom would always say that our bodies "tell us" when we need to slow down.

Not surprising that you also love Aretha's music - glad you enjoyed.

Have a peaceful day. Love, Maria
