marcoujor: St. Rocco - Protect Our Pets

One of my beloved colleagues recently wrote me when her little dog, Wrigley, went missing.

I recalled that helpless and anxious feeling that can happen in the blink of an eye to any of us.

Before you worry another moment, Wrigley came home on his own after a couple nerve - wracking days to his loving Momma who showered him with kisses - after a good shower, of course!

Wrigley is also the proud new owner of a microchip for if / when he decides to go exploring.
I was so impressed with Barbara’s calmness during this canine crisis. She told me about her faith in the patron saint of dogs. In fact, she has a medallion of St. Rocco (Roch) that she wore the entire time Wrigley was out ‘on the town’.

I did a little reading about Rocco. He has quite a story.

Born in 1340 A.D. in Montpellier, France, his parents died when he was a little boy - leaving him an orphan under the care of his uncle, the Duke of Montpellier.

Taking a vow of poverty, Rocco distributed his wealth among the poor and moved to Rome. During his travels, he contracted the plague. With an open sore on his leg, Rocco was banished from the city and took refuge in a cave.

Miraculously a dog faithfully brought him bread which kept Rocco alive. The dog visited from a nearby castle. The Lord of this castle followed his dog into the woods and discovered Rocco. The nobleman had pity on Rocco and brought him to his castle where Rocco was cured.

Rocco traveled through northern Italy for a few more years before returning to his birthplace in France. The rest of his life was filled with suffering and unjust imprisonment, ultimately being reunited with his Uncle before his death.

After his death, St. Rocco performed many miracles. Wrigley’s safe return is one of these miracles!

Today, August 16th, happens to be the commemoration of St. Rocco’s death.

May you never need to pray to him for the safe return of your four-legged friends yet wanted you to know Rocco is furrever on the job.

Dear Mareer,

Seems like a good idea to get one of those medallions, and enhance it with a modern 'pooch chip' if he/she tends to be a happy wanderer.

Poor St. Rocco. I keep on thinking of him with that huge open sore. Glad though that the Lord of the Castle had a nursing background, and managed the cure.

Such a cute story, glad the dawg returned safely, and it's always nice to hear Bruce. Nice article.

Love and hugs,
Vickster

Thanks for being the first to stop by, dear Vickster.

Rocco did have a sad life for the most part - how wonderful to have a faithful dog by your side in good times and bad.

Glad you enjoyed some Bruce too. Hugs, mareer

Hello mar - What a nice story to wake up to, A Saint that rescued dogs. And a Lord that rescued saints. There must be many mini saints. Wrigley is a great name for a dog.

Hello to you, Mike,

I agree. I live with a couple saints with tarnished paws ... ;)

I do love 'Wrigley' for a name as well.

Have a peaceful day. Hugs, mar

Prof. Mahreer,

I so love happy endings and very happy Wrigley made it home unharmed!

It's my first to hear of St. Rocco. Thanks for including his story. :)

Dear Ange,

I'm rather partial to happy endings myself... :)

I loved reading about the Saints with Mom as a kid yet I don't remember learning of Rocco either - my pleasure to share his story here.

Thanks for doing such a great job (as always) situating my post.

A beautiful story and keen insight for those of us who love our family of pets. Happy for Wrigley that he came home.

What a beautiful story! Rocco surely had an adventurous life.

Never underestimate the intelligence of a dog!

Dear Martie,

I have long believed that dogs are smarter / more intuitive than most people I meet.

Thanks for your visit. Love and hugs to you too, mar

What a neat story about Rocco...and I'm glad Wrigley was found. (And I love that name! Hehe). But, that's so good to know about Rocco. I once had a dog go missing for a few days and didn't know about Rocco - I wish I had. He did come back to us, but it's good to know about this wonderful Saint who can be "on the job" to help pet owners. Hmm...curious. Do you think it works for cats, too? I have both cats and dogs, so I'm just curious. :) Hope you're well, sweet friend. I really enjoyed the read. And I'm very glad to hear Wrigley's story, too, and that it ended well. Sending you big hugs and keep sharing beautiful things! xoxo

Dear Cynthia,

I read that Rocco is also considered the patron saint of contagious illnesses, unjust imprisonment and bachelors.

As far as kitties go, I don't think you can go wrong with St. Francis of Assisi - the patron saint of all animals.

Looks like Wrigley is getting quite a following - he is adoggable for sure.

Thanks for your beautiful comment. Love and hugs to you, Maria

Hi Maria:
I had read about this a few years back. You have a winner here especially when you are talking about dogs. There are some amazing stories them and what they are capable of.
As you are aware I now have "Angel" for the time being she is a full on leash dog. Just not certain if she would know where home is as it has only been 3 days.
Well done Maria...

Hugs from Alberta

Dear Rolly,

I'm so happy that you and Angel are a team now. I love how safe you're being with her until she gets to know the lay of the land.

Love and hugs to you both, Maria

Dear Maria,

Thank you for sharing this interesting story which I never had heard of before. I think we are all blessed with two-and four legged saints in one way or another. I'm so happy and relieved to hear that Wrigley found his way back home. It's a pet owner's worst nightmare having their beloved friends disappear.
Freddie is chipped and so were Max. I pray that Freddie never will run away and not find his way back home, or even worse, get stolen, that unfortunately happens quite often. I shudder when I see owners leave their dogs outside the store or supermarket while they go in shopping. No one is leaving their baby waiting outside a store, so why do it to a dog?! So many dog owners lose their dogs just because of that reason. I hope those unfortunate dogs have their own saints watching over them.
Take care of yourself and your sweet, furry babies, dear Maria.
Love and hugs from a sunny Sweden,
Sannel

Dear Sannel,

I'm not surprised that your beautiful dogs have been / are chipped.

I get white hot mad at the thought of any dog being stolen, abused or exploited. I cannot imagine leaving one of my babies tied up while I go shopping - how vulnerable for them.

Love and hugs to you and Freddie, Maria

St Rocco, Huh? Wish I had know about him when my little "hoodlum" jumped out of my car window as it was parked in the lot at the grocery store, 2 yrs. ago, 4th of July!! (It was the fireworks going off that scared him & caused him to go running off, probably looking for Mama, because he's such a damned Mama's Boy!!)
My son and I did everything possible to search for him all day and night, including put out an APB with the Dog Warden!
Well, I should now Thank Saint Rocco for keeping him safe. A woman found his wandering and called the Dog warden, who then put his silly mug on Facebook. My son saw it and called me to tell me I could bail out my Hoodlum dog!! I'll never forget the whole thing! Love ya, Paula

Oh my gosh, Paula,

What a scary, yet happy ending story, about your 'hoodlum'. I can only imagine how frightened then relieved you were...

All the more reason for us to have St. Rocco in our corner, eh?!
