![]() A short while ago I sent out a questionnaire to family, friends and colleagues on a variety of subjects. In this new year, I thought I'd share the feedback from a question focused on self care, a subject I stress with all of the nursing students I come in contact with. Here are some of the responses I received. How do you take care of yourself?💠Hot yoga, meditation, being quiet, attending workshops, going for walks, keeping meaningful company 💠Exercise, sleep, read 💠Eat well, exercise and pray 💠Sharing what I'm feeling, needing / wanting 💠Learning how to pace myself 💠The best I can 💠With a lot of procrastination 💠By being my own parents. 💠I pretty much do my best to follow Christ's lead. And because I believe a Christian's body is a temple for Christ, I do my best to treat it appropriately. It has to last me until He says I don't need it any more. ☺ 💠I truly listen to my inner voice. If I am feeling tired, I rest. Hungry, I find nourishment. Lonely, seek out friends. Sad, reach for people and activities that lift my spirits. You get the picture. Just pay attention and respond. It's one of the few simple jobs we have. When I see responses such as this, I'm once again struck by the similarities we share amidst our outward differences. The beauty of self care is the many forms it can take, considering the physical, emotional and social aspects of our lives. It does take conscious determination to care for ourselves as well as we do others in our lives, both personally and professionally. I will continue to spend as much time as possible with my life coaches, Andy and Zoey. They do wonders for all aspects of my health and they love me unconditionally, even when I take a few steps backwards. They also appreciate my singing voice and odd sense of humor! ☺ When you have about 8-minutes, this video, A self-care revolution TED Talk by Megan McCormick, is worthy of your time. Please share with anyone in your life who needs a push, or reminder about the many benefits of self care. Let's make this is the year of self care, all the while, remembering that self care is not selfish. How about it? Share your strategies with me in the comment section or send me an email. Self-care is something we tend to overlook in the detail-filled, day-to-day business of living. Sometimes our care for others outweighs our own. "Let's make this is the year of self care, all the while, remembering that self care is not selfish." Beautifully stated, and so very true. Hugs, dear Maria for this inspiring article.

Hello Mar - This is an important lesson. My focus was always elsewhere. Now, being a tad older, many lessons have been learned regarding the lack of self-care.

Self care has never seemed important until recently. Now, I'm paying better attention to the things I've neglected for a long time. Seeing the folks at the nursing home inspires me to eat better, get a bit of exercise - even if it's just walking or vacuuming the house. I got a stationary bicycle for Christmas and I'm hoping it will never turn into a clothes hamper! So far, I'm on it a few minutes daily huffing and puffing.
