In last week’s desk post,
Valuing Values, I challenged myself to brainstorm on those core values that continue to guide my life journey.

I received wonderful feedback from friends and readers - both in the comment section and via email.

Some shared memories of their own childhood, like this email from a friend...
“Just reading your blog. Yesterday would have been my Father’s birthday. November 14,1915. He would have been 102..!!! That was unbelievable. It is funny when the day comes you go right back there. Can see him and watching my Mom making his cream puffs! That was what he always wanted and she baked a lot of them. It was enough for our dinner and dessert!”

Another friend gave me a challenge in her remarks, and she knows how much I love a challenge...
“Great post on values!  You should try and make an acronym of it!”
Okay, how does this grab you? I’m also including some of my favorite quotes to ponder...
Do the RIGHT THING…

Respect
“I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.” Maya Angelou

Integrity
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." John F. Kennedy

Growth
"It's very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxing. Not only does it help prevent the onset of many illnesses that develop through chronic tension and worrying; it allows us to clear our minds, focus, and find creative solutions to problems." Thich Nhat Hanh

Humor / Positivism
"Ships don't sink because of the water around them but because of the water that gets in them. Don't let what's happening around you get inside you and weigh you down." (Unknown Author)

Truth / Authenticity / Honesty
“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” Thomas Jefferson

Trustworthiness
“When people honor each other, there is a trust established that leads to synergy, interdependence, and deep respect. Both parties make decisions and choices based on what is right, what is best, what is valued most highly." Blaine Lee

Harmony / Peace
Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in the way they like." Lao Tzu

Inquiry / Curiosity
"Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It's your masterpiece after all." Nathan W. Morris

Nonpartisanship / Fairness / Balance
“Auditur et altera pars. (The other side shall be heard as well.)” Seneca

Generosity / Compassion
“You cannot brighten another’s path without lighting your own.” Frank McKinney

Enjoy this inspirational music...

You did a great job coming up with just the right quotes for the Right Thing acronym. This is the perfect time for this reminder of our real values as we celebrate Thanksgiving and approach the Christmas frenzied shopping season. Hugs and love.

Dear Martie,

I also love the way you incorporate wise thoughts into your musings.

It's interesting how one (or more) of these wise nuggets can resonate with each of us.

Dear Sannel,

It's not surprising this quote called to you, as this is precisely how I regard you - one of the kindest, most compassionate lights in my world.

Thanks also for your insightful remarks last week which added depth to this post.

Ah, a Lindsey Sterling video! I'm listening as I type this. I absolutely love her music. :)
Anyways, I enjoyed reading your RIGHT THING acronym. There is a lot of wisdom in those lines. And you're right: I get many ideas and inspiration from the beautiful comments people make on my blog. Sending you big hugs and the HAPPIEST of Thanksgivings. I'm so grateful for you and your kindness! I've sent the labels on their way. Hopefully they'll get to you sooner rather than later. <3 Hugs and more hugs!

On this Thanksgiving Day, I am ever grateful that you are a dear friend - one who inspires me and brightens my world with your generous and authentic soul.

I will be on the lookout for the labels and write you when they arrive.

Happy, blessed Thanksgiving Day to you and yours. Love, Maria

Hi Mar...

Interesting I just finished reading a relatively long thesis the other night on how people find their joy. I was raised in a great home, but the silent killer negativity stole much joy and peace. I started with being as loving as I can and the rest just seems to find its own balance.

It still can creep in once in a while causing an uneasy feeling thus it is a constant to attempt to stay positive. I can laugh now but someone made a comment to me that sort of spun me for a loop. "What you find displeasing in others is something you do not like about yourself... just a reminder when we are pointing that one finger at another there are three pointing back at myself. That advice was quite the awakening.

Hugs from Alberta

Dear Rolly,

I love the thoughtful reflection in your comment - thank you for sharing your childhood experiences as well as your friend's wise observations.

I have also learned to go deep within myself when something bothers or hurts me in someone else's behavior. There is typically a connection to something in my values system to consider.

Big hugs to you from PA, Maria
