marcoujor: Valuing Values

11/15/2017

“What is firmly established cannot be uprooted. What is firmly grasped cannot slip away. It will be honored from generation to generation.” (Lao Tsu)
Values are treasured ideals, beliefs or qualities that are influenced by family, culture, environment and education (Burkhardt, 2008).

Values clarification helps to increase awareness of our personal and/or professional values.

I challenge my students to reflect on and discuss their values. This leads to enhanced critical thinking and the ability to consider other perspectives, even when not in agreement.

In this post, I challenged myself to brainstorm on those core values that continue to guide my life journey.

I believe in…

  • RESPECT: Physical, verbal, emotional abuse/violence is never acceptable.

  • PEACE: It’s better to walk away/count to 100 before speaking in anger.

  • BALANCE: “It takes two to tango.” Aka, “There are always (at least) two sides to the story.”

  • HONESTY: Honesty is always the best policy.

  • AUTHENTICITY: Saying “I’m sorry,” along with meaning it, goes a long way.

  • CURIOSITY: There is no stupid question.

  • GROWTH: Admitting what you don’t know/demonstrating intellectual humility is the smartest strategy.

  • TRUSTWORTHINESS: Admitting you’ve made a mistake is human. Lying about/covering it up is a way bigger problem than the mistake itself.

  • FAIRNESS: It’s better to be hard on the issue and not on the person.

  • COMPASSION: When all else fails, revert to The Golden Rule.

I now challenge you to think about what values and beliefs guide your daily life. Feel free to share in the comments or email.

Hey, friend! Lovely post. I was reading through all your values thinking that you are a REMARKABLE teacher and I bet all your students appreciate all the good things that you impart to them - you are very wise. I love the fact that you do such wonderful exercises with your students and they're lucky to have you.
I can also imagine that you have a no-nonsense approach to your values: if someone violates them, I have no doubt you'll be effective in "getting someone in line." It's a quality I so admire.
Great choices in music today, too. I'm a Billy Joel fan (my fave is "piano man" and I love Nora's seductive voice. I always think of a 50's cafe or something with her music playing on the radio, yet it's also so modern!
In other news, I got your card a couple days ago. Thank you! I'll send it along shortly.
I hope you have a fantastic week, sweet friend! Sending you hugs, love, peace, joy, and all the good things. <3

Dear Cynthia,

What a lovely comment. You are most astute in that my personal and professional values are heavily aligned.

So happy you enjoyed these song selections as well. You have a beautiful old soul in your musical tastes.

Thanks for letting me know your card arrived!

Love you and hugs too, Maria

I love that you share these lessons with your students and with your readers. Good values are key to making this a better world.
I like integrity as a key value. Do what you say you're going to do. Hugs and thanks for another great installment.

Dear Peg,

When making introductions with new students and the patients on the unit, I ask: "What do you most need or appreciate from your nurse?"

Nine times out of ten the answer is: "Keep your word. Do what you promise you'll do."

Thanks for adding the value of Integrity to this list. Love it and you too, Maria

Fond memories of a course with beginning freshmen! We explored all sort of literature from Dickens, to Dorothy Day, to Robert Reich, to Lao Tsu. It is impossible to forget his seminal quote..."A journey of a million miles begin with just a step". Barbara

Dear Barbara,

How I wish I could have sat in your class room. As it is, I learn much from you on a regular basis...lucky me!

Have a peaceful weekend and HI to Wrigley ...!

Prof. Mahreer,

Pretty sure that at one time or another, and some on multiple occasions, I've failed at everything on your list.

Thankfully, time has enhanced my abilities of clarity and appreciation, lol.

Dear Ange,

Pretty 'definite' that I've had issues with all of these values. This is proof that we indeed, learn from our mistakes!

As Billy Joel would sing... "I love you just the way you are..."

Big hugs - Happy Friday, mar

These core values should be adopted by all people on this planet. Thanks for listing them, dear Mar!

What a 'WOW' comment, dear Martie - thank you.

A dear college friend emailed me that I should make an acronym out of these values... I admit that both of you have me thinking!

Another great post. I believe respect, especially for other people's points of view is vital to promote peace on earth.
The upcoming holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas will present all of us with many ways to show the respect we have for ourselves and others.
Sending Blessings and Hugs,
Gail

Dearest Maria,

Wishing your Dad in Heaven a Happy Birthday this 16th of November. My dear Dad, if he had lived, would have turned 94 too, on the 19th of December this year.

I believe in all those significant beliefs you shared here in your wonderful post. I would also add open-mindedness and positivity to this list of core values.

Thank you for an inspirational post which had me reflecting about my very own deeply held beliefs.

Take care and I wish you a beautiful day filled with happy memories of your beloved Dad!
Love and hugs,

Sannel

I'm smiling at the thought of our Dads meeting up in heaven. Thanks for the sentimental message you sent me via Jackie Lawson - it touched my heart.

Love and hugs to you and Freddie too, Maria

Hi dear Mareer,

That's an impressive list. I've no doubt you remember them on a daily basis. This is why its so important to pass on values to children, and of course they have to see you live them too.

Thank you so much for the sharing, and for these great reminders. Such a shame that so many in the world appear to have forgotten them, or never learned about them.

Love and hugs,
Vickster
