Marusic: On Change

“Change is as inexorable as time, yet nothing meets with more resistance.” ~ Benjamin Disraeli

This short but sage quote hits me on a personal level. I am initially very skeptical, sometimes even resentful, when asked to change - to adjust - to be flexible.

I pride myself on having it together - being organized - being prepared in each and every situation.

Personally and professionally I understand I don’t have all the answers. What an onerous responsibility that would be, when I think about it. However, I am open to those who do have answers/suggestions and I’m not afraid to ask for help.
Inevitably change is necessary, whether in assignment or even procedure. After all my huffing and puffing, I find that most change is productive, even if in one minor aspect.

And, just as inevitably, change is relative. For me to kvetch over something as trivial as more paperwork/more tracking of information seems very out of place when people all over the United States, Canada and the world are dealing with the extremes of Mother Nature and other natural and man-made atrocities.

Recently I had to make a change. The details aren’t important. I know that each of you can insert your own circumstances and situation to have more meaning for you, at times when you have needed to change ‘like it or not’.

This time I decided to don my Marusic hat when I worked through this change, quite successfully I might add, with the help of some wonderful people who know who they are. Music has a way of soothing ‘my savage beast’ and giving me a broad perspective of things that can, at least initially, feel very personal.

I have severely restrained myself in selecting only five songs that help me deal with change - songs that help me go from ‘gnashing my teeth’ to ‘seeing the cloud’s silver lining’.

Queen with David Bowie and Annie Lennox: Under Pressure

REO Speedwagon: Roll With the Changes

David Bowie: Changes

George Harrison: All Things Must Pass

Scorpions: Winds of Change

How about you? Do you have a song that helps you deal with change? Let me know in whatever way you keep in touch with me.

☙ Tumbling and Searching via Fireside with Rolly

Until next week, keep rolling with the changes and take good care,

The only thing constant in this life is change - Heraclitis of Ephesus
Seems there is no end to it. Loved your song choices. I keep singing David Bowie's "Changes" in my head, too.

Dear Peg,

Your quote choice is perfect and so true.

My thoughts are with you every day as you face the 'changes' in your life. Love you very much, Maria

Changes are indeed inevitable as we march our way through this life. Some are slow in coming and others arrive quickly like our recent hurricanes which have disrupted so many people's lives in Texas, Florida and elsewhere.

I like songs like "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler.

While the song may not address the word change like the songs you featured, it does address people who help lift a person up when they need some support. Many people need others like perhaps never before in the aftermath of these hurricanes and other disasters.

There are many inspirational songs that can fill our hearts and minds with things we need to hear on occasion.

Insightful comment, dear Peggy. I love this Bette Midler song as you do - it reminds me of a professor who had a profoundly positive effect on me.

Thinking of you and your family - hoping things are resolving in your Texas surrounds. Take good care.

Maria....."Change" can be a good thing, done for all the right reasons. We need to give ourselves the time and accept the realities, in order to make our changes. Your attitude, as always, is positive and healthy. Love your music choices.... Another interesting post. Stay Happy, Paula

I agree it takes some time to accept the changes that are happening around us.

Glad you enjoyed the music too. Love ya, Maria

Dear Maria,

I hate change because it forces me out of my comfort zone. It also forces me to obtain extra knowledge, and this takes time and energy I would rather spend on my established hobbies. However, after this phase, I am always on a higher level, knowing more and therefore able to do more.

Thanks for this music. I will most certainly use it when I have to cope with change again.

Hugs,
Martie

Dear Martie,

Your attitude towards change and the positive effects it can eventually have is healthy - no doubt due to your life experiences.

I'm happy you'll add these songs to your musical 'medicine cabinet'. Love you and big hugs too, mar

Maria,I didn't know you were a blogger! How cool! Your comments about change are so true! I am also one who resists it with all my strength, only to realize that it is usually inevitable, and as you say, often the harbinger of something new and better!

Yup, dear Michele - I love to write and music is pretty heavily featured in my musings.

As far as those "wonderful people who know who they are", thank YOU for your support, assist and especially your humor.

Oh and - SYS... :)

Prof. Mahreer,

I do okay with change, if it's one that's for the better, like an upgrade or an easier method to get from point A to point B.

The changes I dislike are the ones that are due to system failure, be they body or tech related, lol.

Two of my fav go to songs to expedite a refocus on my part are the same ones my great-great-grand-mama loved, sang and played: Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art.

She was born in the 1870s, a farmer's daughter. She had eight children and lost three of them, as well as several grandchildren and her husband before she walked on in 1973. I was in 3rd grade that year. She was awesome and was intimately familiar with the Source of her strength and help through troubled times. 💗

Dear Ange,

Your great - great - grand mama and my mom had similar taste in inspirational music. Your GGGM sounds like a pillar of strength, faith and love - a great role model for you for sure.

I share your views on change and thank you for this beautiful comment. Love and hugs, mar

Hi Maria...
Change who said change...lol... yes we all fight it and yet unless we change and adapt the world does not wait for us. I find the world of technology fascinating. Staying ahead of the times is much like getting caught in an avalanche. Neither are much fun... but alas change I do and after a time well it is not so bad...

Proud of the way you are so adaptable...

Hugs from Canada

You sound adaptable as well, dear Rolly.

I can always hear my mom saying 'you can't fight City Hall' - right as usual.

Wishing you and Angel a peaceful and comfortable night.

Hugs from PA, Maria

I so love your posts, sweet Maria! I am sorry for my tardiness in getting over here and responding to comments on my blog: my new work at the school has kept me busy and I'm taking an evening class that is required for all staff - this is a good thing; the class is so interesting about improving race relations and being an ally. I love it. :)
Needless to say: change. Oh my goodness, this new(ish) job has illustrated that change is definitely constant. Haha. But switching from my old job to this new one, having the transition time between...I was totally thinking about that today: no joke. The idea of the comfort zone.
Oh my goodness - you have TOTALLY inspired a post! I *can't* wait! :D
Also, I've been working on the interview...I hope to have it finished soon. :)
Sending you sweet hugs, my dear! I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week. xoxo

LOL, Cynthia...I don't have the word tardy in my Weebly list - so, to me, you are right on time.

How lovely that this post has inspired you - will look forward to your work, as I do each week.

No rush with the interview but I know it will be fabulous.

Have a peaceful day. Love and hugs, Maria

Life is change. Static is anti-life. That's the flaw in 'perfection'. It's static,, having no need for change. True, change is uncertainty. But so is life.

A very good book by Alan Watts on that subject is "The Wisdom of Uncertainty". By embracing it, one flows with it and has more control over whether it's 'good' change or 'bad' change. There is much power in that.

I confess that I tend to settle into a rut, and tend to think,"Of, how inconvenient" when forced to stir out of it. Haha. But it is the inevitable change which keeps me.from getting too stale and 'set'.

Sounds like a book I will be putting on my reading list - thank you.

Love you and hugs, my dear role model. Have a peaceful day.

I so agree that change can imply all sorts of connotations, Maria...trepidation is one, whether we "like it or not," as it can challenge our comfort zone. Sometimes this comfort zone becomes a friend of sorts that we have come to rely upon. And sometimes, we look for the intrinsic beauty of it all. I love your Marcusic choices...but I always do. Hugs, and Happy Sunday. :-)
