Marusic: The Sevens Have It

I recently got an unexpected package in the mail from a friend who lives out of state. It was a CD called “Sounds of the 60’s.” Ordinarily this would be cause for smiles and an instant trip to my sound system to play my new treasure.

On this day, my eyes were misty amidst my smiles as I read (and re-read several time) the accompanying note. Here is a bit of what I’m referring to...

My Sweet Maria,

This may look like an ordinary music CD and for the most part, it is. Except for the fact that it is being sent with much love, there is a bit of selfish thought behind it.

Because I’m well aware that you are a fanatical music lover, who enjoys a vast assortment of various musical styles … I chose one of my top three favorites and that would be OF COURSE, fabulous songs from the Boomer era!! Oh how this era of music fills my heart with joy and makes me sing, dance, laugh and sometimes cry, but most of all “remember.” Yes, another place, another time, an entirely different life. One I desperately miss.

So, I won’t allow myself to MISS you nor let you forget me! Play this CD now and then … see me, hear me, sing with me and let’s dance!

To your listening pleasure. Thank you for your friendship. Much love.
I guess I’m an easy read when my buddy referred to me as ‘a fanatical music lover who enjoys a vast assortment of various musical styles. In fact, she inspired this month’s ‘Marusical’ post…

I’ve decided to focus on every ‘7th’ year of my life--narrowing down to one song choice for 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997, 2007 and 2017. Mind you, this was no easy feat, as I challenged myself to selecting a different genre from every wonderful decade, including R&B, pop, country, piano rock, alt rock and electronic soul.

So take your time from this point on. You may hear some favorites. I hope I introduce you to a couple artists you may not have heard of before.

And please keep your favorites and theme suggestions coming. I will be considering and incorporating each and every fabulous suggestion.

Happy listening. It’s okay to dance. No one is looking!

Hi mar - Now, how am I supposed to pick a song from that list to listen to this morning? (By the way, Elton won.) And who the heck is Sampha, I am behind on my music. Four decades behind. Happy Wednesday.

Dear Mike,

I seem to recall your partiality towards EJ music - thanks so much for stopping by!

Have a peaceful day. Hugs, mar

Dear Mar,

THREE of the songs are new to me! What have I missed?!

The music of the 60's and 70's have a special place in my heart.

Thanks for this collection!

Hugs,

Martie

Dear Martie,

I love introducing you / others to new (even if older) artists.

I 'think' (at least today) that my two decades of preference are the 1970s and the 1980s - although every years has some fabulous contributions.

And to you and Mike, Sampha is very new to me as well - he has been a back up vocalist for many and has now (rightfully) launched onto a solo path...

Love nd hugs too, mar

Wow! These are great selections. How wonderful that you love to curate music like this. Next up we'll have playlists. Hehe. Playlists for every mood and genre. And you can do it, too. :) Music of the 2000s to make you feel better, music for the new mom, music for the end of a tough day, music for a party, music for a jazzy mood. Hehe. I can see all of it.
I hope you have a wonderful week, sweet friend! Sending you many hugs and much light! HUGS!!

Dear Cynthia,

As much as I love being a nurse, I have often dreamed of being a DJ - especially on an eclectic station such as NPR / XPN.

Thanks for such a validating comment - I love (and will consider) all of your ideas in the months to come. Love, Maria

Maria....Once again you are special & get to be the very First person I am christening my NEW computer, mouse and awesome keyboard!
Seriously, what a keyboard! The computer came with one but my son noticed I was admiring a different one and I simply made a comment about it. He told the sales rep to put that keyboard in my package to be shipped!! It was twice as expensive as all the others & I argued with him. Then he made me cry, he said, "Mom, you're worth it, don't argue with me. I can never do enough for my super Mom." Good Lord, I have no idea how I deserve these men I call my sons!! I'm so blessed.
Your "friend from out of town," must love you as much as I do....Can't say as I blame her.
The music is great and as always, you introduce me to artists I do not know. Love it! Got a kick out of the retro picture of Aretha! She's just a baby in it! R-E-S-P-E-C-T....I remember a group of female friends and I singing that tune as loudly as possible whenever it played! It was the beginning of the Boomer Broads Break OUT mission! LOL. We did a hell of a lot more than just burn our bras!
I'm ready to contact Angelia...show me how, girlfriend. Love ya, Paula

Dear Paula,

So thrilled that you are happy with your new computer and your keyboard. Your son sounds just like you - beautiful, loving and kind-hearted.

I feel as though I was right there singing with you and your Boomer Broads. I was torn between 'I Say a Little Prayer' and 'Respect' for the 60's decade in this post... ;)

Hoping you and Ange connect soon - I sent you both an email.

Love you and have a peaceful day, Maria

Hi Maria...

What a cool and endearing article. And one that does put "pep in our step..." and more. I just looooved Sampha. The piano keys are part of him; the notes play the soul, and it brought me close in memory of my mother who taught me to play the piano. I'm there, girlfriend. :-)

Luv u....

Genna

Great to see you here, dear Genna.

I'm so happy Sampha's music brought back loving memories of your Mom - same for me. I found his video to be hauntingly beautiful.

Hope you are having a peaceful weekend. Hugs, Maria

Dear Maria,

Thank you for sharing that beautiful note as well as the wonderful music collection. I do love them all, but what can I say, ABBA my fellow countrymen will always have a special place in this Swedish heart. :) Thank you for introducing me yet again to another musician I have not heard of before. I'm talking about Sampha. What a great voice!
Wishing you a lovely and safe week ahead.
Love and hugs,
Sannel

Dear Sannel,

We share a love of ABBA - for the longest time, I thought "Dancing Queen" was about me (LOL)!

Love the idea of Sampha's fan base growing - I think he has the chops to be around for a good while.

Love and hugs to you too, Maria

Prof. Mahreer,

What a perfect gift to get loads of enjoyment from!

The featured videos brought back some memories. I was born in 64, and music was always a key feature in our home, with tunes from the 60s and 70s being played often.

Too, it's great to see Abba getting placed in one of your posts. I stillllll love their music!

How wonderful when my post brings back beautiful childhood memories - thanks for sharing that, dear Ange.

We had our stereo on a good bit of the day as well - and today, that music takes me right back to 'New Hope Street'.

Love you and have a peaceful day, mar
